Blog

My thoughts on life, design, kitty cats and other such nonsense. Nothing too serious.

You sound like you’re from LANDAN!

Long, photo filled post due to my crapness of blogging anything decent recently.

I am now settled in London. Life is going GREAT. I think on my last post I was still in Dundee looking for work and generally being a bit of an unemployed bum. Well, that’s all changed - I am now Nonsense London’s official full-time Ninja-Geek and it feels GOOD.

Nonsense are a small advertising and marketing company with a digital focus based in Soho. The team is pretty freakin’ good and the work is hugely varied - which makes for a very happy Pablo. In my first week I was helping produce visuals for a big pitch, redesign websites and even suspending expensive video cameras from the roof for a video shoot I’m producing for them. All in all pretty dead good; I’m really looking forward to my time here in this creative basement studio.

The video shoot was for a company called WYGO (pronounced wigoo and stands for When You Grow Up) and, in short, involved us making a massive 7 foot high ‘laptop’ out of papier maché in a Channel 4 style ‘coming together’ shot. I was tasked with filming and editing the ‘making of’ video to be featured on Nonsense’s website i.e: film the crap out of everyone for two days.

This is a shot of the studio, out in Battersea, which was awesome. I like how the silhouettes screw with perspective and they look like they’re about to shneck each other; they ‘aint. The main hall was a massive white infinity wall with the rest of the building being made up of tiny rooms with all sorts of cool extras. Anyway, for more info on what WYGU is click here or scroll down for some photos of papier maché and the shoot.

In other news, the lovely Mike Vanis and Jen Strachan came to visit. We had fun drinking wine, playing on Brick Lane, visiting design festival shows and generally having a bit of a giggle. We also had a sing-a-long to ‘Daydream Believer’ to some beach sculptors carving away on the Thames riverbed at low tide. Craziness I tell you.

Catchup

Wow, I’ve been soo busy updating my site that I have completely neglected my blog. Not cool, Pablo, not cool at all.

Anyway, I’ve got myself a spare 15 minutes so I thought I’d cobble together a quick roundup on my activities over the past *checks date of last post*, sheesh SIX WEEKS. Flippin’ ‘eck.

Let’s start at the beginning.

At the beginning of July I exhibited my Final Year Major Project (SlopeScope) at New Designers in London at the Business Design Centre, Islington.

ANY budding final year design students should DEFINITELY consider going, worth the expense, trust me!

It was fantastic. Not only did I get to meet a load of high fliers in the industry, see my competition and generally have an exciting time but I also won a prize!

CyberDuck graciously awarded me their Associate prize which consisted of a pretty certificate, a 3 month internship and A FREAKIN’ IPAD! Unfortunately the internship was not suitable and I decided to turn it down.

Regardless, I am ditching my plans to move to Manchester and will be moving to The Big Smoke on the 31st of August ready for action! Got a job? I need one.

Some people may think I’d be mad to consider moving to such an expensive city without a job lined up. Maybe I am, but that’s not stopping me; London is where the action is and I’m going to be a significant part of that. In the interim while I apply for jobs, attend interviews and generally try and find work I shall be keeping up my freelance (old and new).

Meanwhile I am currently back in Dundee packing up my life into cardboard boxes, working on Shortbread and in talks with SKK Lighting about some future work.

The future’s bright. Excitement.
