My thoughts on life, design, kitty cats and other such nonsense. Nothing too serious.

Settling on concept

Today I am leaving the electronics be and focusing on crafting the concept of the idea a little more. I definitely haven’t been wasting time getting the electronics working but I must press on and nail the core elements of the project down so that I don’t get carried away fiddling with something to get it just right when I may end up changing it later down the line for whatever reason.

I have two options really (quite generic at this stage, but will be less so by 5pm tonight):

  • A rough and ready piece of kit for domestic use anywhere
The thinking here is that the camera tripod is something which the average person can either afford or can build for themselves cheaply. It is something you can take with you and ‘stab’ into the snow anywhere. The entire experience is self managed and allows for a high degree of flexibility in terms of shooting and editing personal footage. Main interactions are akin to that, perhaps, of a cameraman or director in that the recording of material is more important to that of having fun and is about capturing footage for post-processing.

This option very much for the filming enthusiast or those interested in the technical applications of a camera.

  • A service offered by a resort on particular pisted runs
An extra service offered by a resort which already has a number of units installed and networked together. Focus is less on the recording of footage but on having fun and focusing on the performance of the ‘ride’. This option allows for a high quality interactive experience post filming without the need for capturing footage. It also lends itself to allow for multiple experience types; a rider could perhaps check their previous run on an iPhone application at the bottom of the slope having just completed their run or play it back a few days later from the comfort of their web browser at home.

This option takes a more background seat allowing for the focus of the interaction to be on the rider themselves doing what they do and not thinking about the rest until the end.

I want to sketch / mock up some ideas for both, however, having written both dieas down I feel slightly more inclined for option two.

Will post my sketches up later today.
