Zoom Phase, roundup.
Had a chat with Graham today about the progression of my project. Rather disappointing actually. He seems very anxious about everything, likely with very good reason as I still feel rather lost in what I’m doing and just fumbling along.
While it’s all good and great that I’m getting my electronics working to quite a high level it feels like the project is becoming a product design piece. I think I need to leave the coding and electronics to rest a few days and work on how my other interactions will work.
A point Graham made today while chatting things over which struck a slight chord (in a good, “design thinking” way) was asking me to define the object a little more; is it a rough and ready piece of kit that the amateur hobbist can make or is it installed on particular slopes at a resort waiting to film those who bought a “ski lift + camera track” pass.
Also, what of the after service (highly coupled with what type of project this is as mentioned above); does the amateur rip the tape themself or does it upload automatically to a CMS online? On the other hand, can a customer using the service at a resort view their previous run immediately after at the bottom of the piste on their portable device?
Finally, other things which I need to think about (definitely not a definitive list):
- which is the best way to track a snowboarder – keep them centred or a wide angle shot of the piste,
- design language; snowsports suggest white but perhaps it should be a highly contrasting colour to avid people crashing into it.
- robustness; do I produce a robust experience prototype or a ‘rough and ready’ one but back it up with a scale model of how I imagine the final object would appear.
All in all, I need to ‘zoom out’ a bit, I think, and try and get a more consistent and level-headed overview of the project again and then focus in again on another part.
